The location was set and the grounds to the rear of the palace was as good a place as any.
I perched on my throne in full regalia. The crown I disliked wearing so much sat atop my head.
Jessica’s crown lay on a purple velvet cushion on the empty throne next to mine.
The council huddled before me. Behind them the population of elves, all dressed in white, sat in silence.
Bernard sat at the centre of the council, dressed in official robes as were the other representatives.
“I have called this meeting at the request of His Majesty, King Nicholas of The North Pole.”
My voice had been magically enhanced so everybody could hear me. “Thank you. Bernard. I have called this meeting to discuss my venture to New York City in order to retrieve the body of Her Majesty, Queen Jessica of The North Pole.”
“Where is she?” one of the council members spoke up.
“Do not speak until you are spoken to,” Bernard admonished.
“That is a fair question and one I know you all want the answer to.” I took a deep breath. “I made the decision to free Jessica while we were crossing the ocean on our journey home.” I could hear the discourse amongst the elves. The council members shuffled on their seats. “I hope you will find it in your hearts to forgive me, but I did what I thought was right.”
“How could you?” another of the council members said.
“Because she was my wife and desired her freedom.” I was angry and hoped for more understanding from my friends. “Your queen was desperate to leave this place and die a mortal death, but I wouldn’t listen, so she left anyway.” I took another deep breath. “To return her to this place would have dishonoured her final wishes and I was not prepared to do that, not for anyone before me today.”
There was total silence.
Bernard spoke up. “I understand your reasons, but can also understand how my brothers and sisters feel. They loved their queen, as did I and wanted their chance to say goodbye to her.”
My eyes sought out Mary. I found her. Her smile gave me strength. “I am deeply sorry I denied you all the chance to say goodbye to your queen, but Jessica’s soul being at peace was paramount and I hope you will understand my reasons.”
Bernard stood, swiftly followed by the other council members. “You are our beloved king and have ruled benevolently for thousands of years, consistently placing the needs of others before your own. Therefore, no further explanation is needed. We love our queen and will miss her presence greatly and cherish our memories, but her soul is now at peace and for that we will always remain thankful.” He bowed his head as did the other members. The other elves stood and bowed their heads too.
I returned the bow. “Thank you, my friends.” Standing up, I had intended to return to the palace but stopped in my tracks, choked with emotion, as the elves began to sing in perfect harmony.
